A government contractor is a company (privately owned or publicly traded but not a state-owned enterprise) - either for profit or non-profit - that produces goods or services under contract for the government. Some communities are largely sustained by government contracting activity; for instance, much of the economy of Northern Virginia consists of government contractors employed directly or indirectly by the federal government of the United States.

• Cyberdyne Systems, originally organized as a manufacturing company, became a major U.S. Military technology contractor after scientists working for the company found the Terminator's crushed remains in a hydraulic press in a factory the company controlled.
• Hammer Industries, a weapons manufacturing corporation headed by Justin Hammer, was the United States government's main weapons contractor in the film Iron Man 2, until their weapons lease was suspended.
